Relationship System Overview
Paralives' relationship system is one of the most sophisticated ever implemented in a life simulation game. Rather than treating relationships as simple linear bars (like "Friendship: 50/100"), Paralives uses a multi-label system that reflects the true complexity of human relationships.
A single Parafolk can simultaneously be your character's best friend, their coworker, their romantic interest, their former classmate, AND their secret rival — each with its own independent progression. This means your relationships feel rich, layered, and deeply personal.
What Makes Relationships Special
Multiple labels per person · Each label levels independently · Combo labels unlock powerful bonuses · Social perks influence success rates · Together Cards shape every interaction · Relationships can be one-sided
Relationship Labels
Every connection between two Parafolks is defined by Relationship Labels. Labels are not exclusive — you can have multiple labels with the same person. Each label has its own level (from 1 to a maximum), and that level can be raised through regular social interactions using Together Cards.
Default Labels
When you first meet another Parafolk, you start as Stranger (if they're outside your household) or Household Member (if they live with you). Both default labels cap at level 5.
How Labels Are Earned
- Family labels — Acquired through birth, marriage, and in-game family creation
- Friendship labels — Built through social interactions and Together Cards
- Romantic labels — Developed through flirty interactions and romantic Together Cards
- Professional labels — Applied automatically when working together or studying together
- Activity labels — Earned by completing specific Life Goals tied to shared hobbies
Together Cards System
Together Cards are one of Paralives' most innovative mechanics. During any group interaction — from casual conversation to cooking together to exercising — a Together Bar gradually fills. After about 20 minutes of shared activity, you're presented with 3 Together Cards to choose from.
Each card represents a different direction the interaction could take, with emotional variants that reflect your Parafolk's current emotional state. Your choice determines what happens next and how the relationship evolves.
How Together Cards Work
- A group interaction begins (2+ Parafolks doing any activity together)
- The Together Bar fills as the interaction continues
- After ~20 minutes, 3 Together Cards appear
- Choose a card to determine the interaction's outcome
- The chosen card affects emotions, relationship labels, and may trigger additional events
Tip: You can do almost ANY activity as a group in Paralives — not just talking. Cook together, exercise together, play instruments together, paint together. Group activities fill the Together Bar faster and create more relationship progress than solo interactions.
Relationship Progression
Leveling Up Labels
Labels aren't automatically leveled — they require regular interaction through Together Cards. Two Parafolks who were Friends lvl 1 in childhood can become Friends lvl 10 as adults if they've consistently done activities together. Higher label levels unlock new relationship perks and interactions.
Relationship Perks
When two Parafolks reach high levels in a shared label, they unlock Relationship Perks. For example, Cooking Buddies at level 20 get powerful bonuses when cooking together. These perks make high-level relationships genuinely beneficial for gameplay.
One-Sided Relationships
Not all relationships are mutual. A Parafolk can develop a crush on someone who doesn't reciprocate, or hold a grudge against someone who doesn't know. These one-sided labels can lead to unique interactions — like sending anonymous love letters to your secret crush.
Social Perks Matter
Social Perks set in the Paramaker determine which Together Cards appear and affect success rates for relationship-building actions. A Parafolk with "Good at Romance" will have a higher chance of romantic Together Cards appearing and succeeding.
Combo Labels
When two Parafolks reach high levels in two different labels simultaneously, players can unlock Combo Labels — powerful combinations with superior perks. For example:
- Coworker + Creative Buddy = Productive Duo (better work performance together)
- Best Friend + Guitar Buddy = Creative Soulmates (unlock unique musical interactions)
Combo Labels represent the depth that real relationships develop over time. Two people who share multiple high-level bonds are fundamentally different from two people with just one connection.

Relationship Tips
- Do activities together, not just talking. Cooking, exercising, gardening, playing music — all activities build relationship labels faster than conversation alone.
- Match Social Perks to your goals. Want romance? Pick "Good at Romance." Career network? Pick professional Social Perks. This significantly affects which Cards appear.
- Pay attention to emotions during Together Cards. Emotional variants of Cards reflect how your Parafolk is feeling. Happy + Flirty might unlock a romance path that Angry + Serious wouldn't.
- Build multiple labels for depth. A relationship with Friend lvl 10 AND Coworker lvl 5 can unlock Productive Duo. Diverse connections create stronger bonds.
- NPCs can't build relationships autonomously yet. At Early Access launch, unplayed NPCs won't autonomously grow relationships with each other or with your Parafolk. This is planned for a future update.
- Family trees come later. The family tree menu isn't available at Early Access launch, but family labels still work through birth and relationships.
- High-level relationships have real gameplay benefits. Don't treat relationships as purely narrative — Cooking Buddies lvl 20 cooking together is a genuine gameplay advantage.
