How to Use This Guide
When Paralives shows an error, it displays an error code or message. This guide covers every known error code with step-by-step solutions. Each entry includes the exact error message, what it means, why it happens, how to fix it, and how to prevent it from recurring.
Finding Error Information
Error messages appear in popup dialogs or in the console log. On Windows, check %LOCALAPPDATA%\Paralives\logs\. On Mac, check ~/Library/Application Support/Paralives/logs/. Always copy the full error text when asking for help.
Launch & Startup Errors
Meaning:
The game cannot initialize DirectX/OpenGL rendering. Your graphics card or drivers are incompatible or outdated.
Solutions:
- Update your GPU drivers to the latest version from NVIDIA/AMD/Intel website
- Verify DirectX 11+ is installed (run dxdiag.exe to check)
- In Steam, right-click Paralives → Properties → Set "Launch Options" to:
-force-d3d11 - If using integrated GPU, force dedicated GPU in your GPU control panel
- Lower display settings before launching: edit
%APPDATA%\Paralives\config.iniand set resolution lower
Prevention:
Keep GPU drivers updated monthly. Avoid beta/optional driver branches unless testing.
Meaning:
Your graphics card does not support DirectX 11 Feature Level 11.0, which is the minimum requirement for Paralives.
Solutions:
- This typically means your GPU is too old (pre-2012 integrated graphics)
- If you have a dedicated GPU, ensure it's being used (not integrated)
- If no compatible GPU available, you need a hardware upgrade — GTX 1060 / RX 6600 XT minimum
- Some users report success with Voodoo ICD wrappers (use at own risk)
Meaning:
The Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package is missing or corrupted on your system.
Solutions:
- Download Visual C++ Redistributable 2015-2022 (x64) from Microsoft's website
- Run the installer and select "Repair"
- Restart your computer after installation
- If still failing, download both x64 AND x86 versions and install both
- Check Windows Updates for any pending VC++ runtime updates
Meaning:
Your most recent save file has become corrupted due to an improper shutdown, crash, or disk error.
Solutions:
- Select "Yes" to load the automatic backup (Steam cloud may have one too)
- If no backup available, navigate to
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Paralives\saves\ - Look for files with
.bakextension — rename them to remove .bak - Check Steam Cloud → Right-click Paralives → Properties → Cloud → View Cloud Files
- To prevent: Enable autosave every 10 min in Settings, never force-quit via Task Manager during saves
Meaning:
Steam cannot connect the game to your Steam client. Usually caused by Steam not running or corrupted app files.
Solutions:
- Make sure Steam is running and you're logged in
- In Steam Library → right-click Paralives → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity
- Wait for verification to complete (may take several minutes)
- If verification finds errors, let it redownload missing files
- Restart Steam completely (not just the window) and try again
Meaning:
Paralives cannot find or initialize your audio output device (speakers/headphones).
Solutions:
- Check that speakers/headphones are plugged in and recognized by Windows/macOS
- Open Sound Settings → ensure a default playback device is selected
- Try plugging in headphones — many games default to headphones when available
- Update audio drivers from your motherboard/laptop manufacturer's website
- In Paralives Settings → Audio → change Output Device from "Default" to your specific device
Solutions:
- This usually means the font cache is corrupted — delete
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Paralives\cache\fonts\ - Verify game files via Steam (Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity)
- If persistent, the game will fall back to system fonts — playable but UI may look different
Solutions:
- Let the game reset to defaults — this is safe and just means redoing your settings
- To prevent: don't manually edit config files while the game is running
- If this recurs constantly, there may be a permissions issue with the config folder
Solutions:
- Check your antivirus quarantine — restore the Paralives executable if found
- Add an exclusion for the entire Paralives install folder in your AV settings
- Common culprits: Windows Defender SmartScreen, Avast, McAfee, Kaspersky
- Temporarily disable real-time scanning to test if AV is the cause
- Add exception path: the folder where Steam installs the game (usually C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Paralives\)
Solutions:
- Clean your Windows temp folder: press Win+R, type
%temp%, delete all files - Empty Recycle Bin
- Ensure your C: drive (or wherever %TEMP% points) has at least 5GB free
- Use Disk Cleanup tool (cleanmgr.exe) to clear system temp files
Solutions:
- Download .NET Framework 4.8 (or newer) from Microsoft Download Center
- Run installer as Administrator
- Restart computer after installation
- Enable .NET via Windows Features (Turn Windows features on/off → .NET Framework 3.5 + 4.8 Advanced Services)
Solutions:
- Right-click the Paralives shortcut or Steam → "Run as Administrator"
- If this happens every time, right-click the executable → Properties → Compatibility → Check "Run as administrator"
- Note: You should NOT normally need admin rights — if you do consistently, check folder permissions
Solutions:
- Verify game files via Steam → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files
- In Steam → Properties → Language — set to desired language, let it download the language pack
- Restart Steam after language change
Solutions:
- You'll be prompted to choose between Local, Cloud, or Latest save — choose the one with the most recent timestamp
- To prevent: avoid playing on multiple computers without letting cloud sync complete between sessions
- Don't force-quit while a cloud sync is in progress (check Steam status bar)
Solutions:
- Delete or edit
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Paralives\config.ini— find the resolution line and set it to your monitor's native res - Launch with windowed mode first: add
-windowedto Steam launch options - If using DSR (Dynamic Super Resolution), disable it in NVIDIA/AMD control panel temporarily
- Check if you're using a custom resolution utility (like Custom Resolution Utility - CRU) that may be reporting wrong max values
In-Game Errors
Meaning:
A Parafolk or NPC cannot calculate a walking path to their destination. Usually caused by blocked routes or malformed lots.
Solutions:
- Check for objects blocking doorways or narrow passages
- Use Move Objects (MOO) cheat or Build Mode to clear obstructions
- If on a custom-built lot, ensure floors are properly connected (no floating floor tiles)
- Reset the stuck Parafolk: click them → Reset Object
- If happening frequently in a particular lot, consider rebuilding the problematic area
Solutions:
- Ensure the placement grid isn't overlapping another object
- Check that the surface is flat enough for the object (some items require flat ground)
- In Build Mode, toggle "Snap to Grid" off for more flexible placement
- Some objects can't be placed too close to walls/edges — move away slightly
- Check lot boundary — some items can't be placed near the edge of the lot
Meaning:
You've queued the maximum number of actions (default: 5). Complete current actions before queuing more.
Solutions:
- Wait for currently queued actions to complete or cancel some
- Click the active Parafolk → cancel individual queued actions (red X icons)
- This limit can sometimes feel restrictive — it's designed to prevent overwhelming the simulation
Solutions:
- Immediately address the critical need (Hunger → eat, Energy → sleep, Hygiene → shower, etc.)
- Critical needs left unattended will cause mood penalties and eventually fainting/passing out
- Set up autonomous behavior in Settings to let Parafolk handle their own needs when low
- Preventive: Keep home well-stocked with food, beds, bathrooms easily accessible
Meaning:
A game script (possibly from a mod or complex interaction) exceeded the maximum allowed execution time. The action was cancelled to prevent freezing.
Solutions:
- If using mods, disable them one-by-one to identify which mod causes the timeout
- Reduce the number of active Parafolk in your household (more Parafolk = more scripts running)
- Simplify complex build mode constructions (too many objects in one area = more calculation)
- Save and reload the game — this clears temporary script backlog
- Report to developers if this happens consistently without mods
Solutions:
- Check disk space — ensure at least 500MB free on your save drive
- Check file permissions on the saves folder (not read-only)
- Antivirus might be blocking file writes — add exclusion for Paralives saves folder
- If save file is large (>50MB), consider starting a new save file (old ones can get bloated)
- Save to a different slot — the current slot's file might be corrupted
Solutions:
- Try loading an earlier save slot (auto-saves rotate through 3 slots)
- Check Steam Cloud for a non-corrupted cloud version of the same save
- If all saves corrupted, you may need to start a new household (painful but sometimes necessary)
- To prevent: Don't force-quit during save operations; keep backups via Steam Cloud
Meaning:
A relationship value went above the internal maximum (usually due to a bug or mod). The value was clamped rather than crashing.
Solutions:
- Harmless warning — relationship was capped at max value automatically
- If caused by a mod, check the mod's documentation for known issues
- No action needed beyond acknowledging the warning
Solutions:
- This can happen after loading a save where time was manipulated (cheats/debug)
- Going to work normally for 1-2 in-game days usually re-syncs the career clock
- If persistent, use the career reset option in debug menu (if cheats enabled)
- Avoid using time-speed cheats while a Parafolk is at work
Build Mode Errors
Solutions:
- Curved walls that are too tight (radius too small) can cause geometry errors
- Walls intersecting other walls at extreme angles may fail validation
- Simplify the curve — increase radius or reduce curve angle
- Undo (Ctrl+Z) and try placing the wall segment differently
- Avoid creating closed loops with curves that self-intersect
Solutions:
- Split-level floors must have at least 0.4m vertical gap between levels
- Use the Floor Height tool to adjust the target floor's elevation
- Delete or move the conflicting floor piece first
- Remember: each "step" in a staircase counts as a separate mini-floor level
Solutions:
- Move one of the overlapping items — use Move Tool (M key) to nudge
- Enable "MoveObjects" cheat to allow more overlap tolerance (still has limits)
- Smaller decorative items can sometimes fit inside larger items' footprint
- Rotate one item to change its bounding box orientation
Solutions:
- Terrain tools only work within your lot boundaries
- Extend your lot first if you need more terrain space (if funds allow)
- Use the Terrain Flatten tool to smooth edges near lot borders
Solutions:
- Staircases need a floor tile at the bottom AND a floor tile at the top
- Ensure both ends of the staircase are snapped to actual floor surfaces
- Curved staircases need extra care — the curve must start and end on flat surfaces
- Try deleting and replacing the connecting floor at one end, then place stairs again
Cloud & Sync Errors
Solutions:
- Check your internet connection — open a browser and verify you can reach store.steampowered.com
- Restart Steam completely
- Check Steam's status page: steamstat.us
- If Steam servers are down, just wait — sync will resume automatically when they're back
- Disable then re-enable Steam Cloud for Paralives in game properties
Solutions:
- Check Steam Workshop — is the mod actually still available? (author may have removed it)
- Unsubscribe and resubscribe to the mod in Steam Workshop
- Clear Steam's download cache: Steam → Settings → Downloads → Clear Cache
- Verify game files (this also re-validates mod installations)
- Some large mods (100MB+) may time out on slow connections — retry during off-peak hours
Meaning:
The achievement was earned but Steam couldn't confirm it (offline mode or server issue). It should unlock next time you go online.
Solutions:
- Go online in Steam (ensure connected)
- Restart Paralives — achievements usually retroactively unlock on next online session
- Check your achievement list on Steam to see if it eventually registered
- If permanently stuck: use Steam achievement manager to unlock it manually (only affects your visible stats)
Performance Errors
Solutions:
- Lower graphics quality preset (Ultra → High → Medium)
- Reduce view distance / draw distance in Graphics settings
- Disable shadows or reduce shadow quality
- Reduce screen resolution or use Dynamic Resolution Scaling (DLSS/FSR if available)
- Close other applications consuming GPU/CPU resources
- In crowded areas (like Sunday Market), consider fewer NPCs or simpler lots nearby
Solutions:
- Lower texture quality from Ultra to High or Medium
- Reduce resolution — VRAM usage scales roughly with pixel count
- Close other GPU-intensive applications (browsers, video editors, etc.)
- If you have an integrated GPU + dedicated GPU, make sure Paralives uses the dedicated one
- This is the #1 cause of stuttering on cards with 4GB or less VRAM
Meaning:
The audio buffer ran empty because the CPU was too busy processing game logic to fill it in time. Results in crackling/popping audio.
Solutions:
- Reduce the number of active Parafolk in your household (biggest performance factor)
- Simplify your lot — fewer objects = less audio processing needed
- Lower audio quality settings (sample rate, number of simultaneous sounds)
- Close background applications that may compete for CPU cycles
- This often accompanies general low FPS — address overall performance first
Mod-Related Errors
Solutions:
- Update the mod via Steam Workshop (click Subscribe again to get latest version)
- If the mod hasn't been updated by its author, you may need to wait or roll back your game version
- Check the mod's page comments — other users may have posted a workaround
- Contact the mod author via Steam comments or their Discord link
Solutions:
- Only use one of the conflicting mods — choose whichever fits your needs better
- Check if either mod has a "compatible versions" patch or alternative edition
- Some mod managers allow setting load priority — try loading one before the other
- Post on the Paralives Discord mod-help channel for community advice
Identifying the crash-causing mod:
- Open Paralives with HALF your mods disabled (divide and conquer approach)
- If crash stops, the culprit is in the disabled batch — enable half of those
- Repeat until you isolate the single problematic mod
- Check the log file at
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Paralives\logs\latest.log— search for "CRASH" or "EXCEPTION" - The log usually names the offending mod near the crash stack trace
When All Else Fails
- Navigate to
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Paralives\and copy thesaves\folder to your Desktop as backup - In Steam → right-click Paralives → Uninstall
- Restart Steam, reinstall Paralives
- Launch once to generate fresh config files, then quit
- Copy your saved
saves\folder back into the new installation directory - Launch — your saves should be intact!
