How the Mood System Works

Paralives uses a layered emotional system where your Parafolk's state is determined by a combination of Core Needs (the five fundamental bars), Emotions (the dominant feeling state), and Moodlets (specific modifiers from events and interactions). Understanding how these three layers interact is the key to keeping your Parafolk productive, social, and fulfilled.

The mood system feeds into everything: career performance, relationship building, skill gain speed, and even what Together Cards appear during social interactions. A stressed Parafolk will perform poorly at work and struggle in conversations, while a confident and energized Parafolk will excel in both.

The Three Layers of Mood

Needs = Base survival bars (Hunger, Energy, Social, Fun, Hygiene) · Emotions = Dominant feeling state determined by needs and events · Moodlets = Individual modifiers from specific situations

The 5 Core Needs

NeedIconWhat Drains ItHow to Fill It
HungerTime passing, physical activityEating meals, snacks, cooking quality food
EnergyPhysical actions, working, exercisingSleeping, resting on couch, taking breaks
SocialTime passing, isolationTalking, playing Together Cards, group activities
FunTime passing with no entertainmentWatching TV, playing instruments, reading, hobbies
HygienePhysical activity, time passingShowering, bathing, washing hands

Need Management: Satisfying needs through quality activities (cooking a full meal instead of eating a snack) provides longer-lasting satisfaction. A single well-cooked meal can sustain your Parafolk through most of the day, while fast food provides a quick but short-lived boost.

Moodlets Explained

Moodlets are individual modifiers that stack on top of your Parafolk's base emotional state. Unlike the emotion itself, which is usually singular, multiple moodlets can be active simultaneously, creating complex emotional states.

Examples of moodlets include:

Stacking Tip: Positive and negative moodlets can stack. A Happy Parafolk with a "Well-Fed" and "Energized" moodlet will perform far better than one with just the base Happy emotion. Plan your daily schedule to stack positive moodlets for important activities.

Emotional Triggers

Understanding what triggers specific emotions helps you manage your Parafolk's state proactively:

Maximizing Happiness

  1. Establish a daily routine: Consistent eating, sleeping, and hygiene schedules prevent need bars from crashing. A well-structured day naturally maintains positive emotions.
  2. Quality over speed in meals: Cook full meals using the stove rather than grabbing instant food. The longer satisfaction duration saves time overall.
  3. Batch social interactions: Instead of scattered short conversations, schedule longer social blocks. A 2-hour hangout creates stronger positive moodlets than ten 10-minute talks.
  4. Match activities to mood: A bored Parafolk won't paint well — schedule creative activities when they're feeling Amused or Inspired.
  5. Manage negative moodlets before social events: Clear stress or sadness before attempting romance or important conversations.
  6. Use Town Events strategically: Events provide social + fun satisfaction in one package — efficient for busy schedules.
  7. Let autonomy work during positive states: When Parafolks are already happy, let autonomy handle routine tasks. Intervene more actively when mood is declining.

Storyteller Influence

The Storyteller you choose affects how harsh negative emotions are and how easily positive emotions are maintained:

Story Card Connection

End-of-day Story Cards reflect your Parafolk's emotional state. A day of positive emotions and satisfied needs produces encouraging, growth-oriented cards. A day of stress and unmet needs produces challenging cards. The quality of your daily mood directly influences the cards you receive and the progression opportunities they unlock.
