Welcome to Paralives
Paralives launched into Steam Early Access on May 25, 2026, and it's throwing a lot at you from the very first minute. The game doesn't always explain its systems clearly, and several quality-of-life features are easy to miss. These 15 tips cover the things most new players discover too late — so you can hit the ground running.

Adjust Settings Before Anything Else
Before you even create your first Parafolk, open the settings menu (three dots in the top-right corner) and configure your clock format (12-hour vs 24-hour), measurement units (metric vs imperial for height), and autosave preference. These seem minor but will affect how you read the game clock and understand your Parafolk's physical dimensions throughout your entire playthrough. Also check color blind options and accessibility settings here.
Master the Bus Stop Fast Travel System
Walking across Melino on foot is slow and wastes your Parafolk's limited daily time. Look for bus stop signs scattered throughout town — click any of them to open a full map of all bus stops in Melino. Select your destination and your Para teleports there instantly for just 3 Paradimes. This is the single biggest quality-of-life feature in Paralives, and most new players completely miss it for the first few hours. Plan your daily route around bus stops to maximize productivity.
Learn to Manually Save with F5
Paralives' autosave behavior is different from most games. Autosave runs periodically but not constantly, and in Early Access there have been reports of save corruption. Get in the habit of manually saving with F5 every time you're about to try something risky — a major build project, an important social interaction, or before exploring a new area. You have three save slots. Use them all. If something goes wrong, you can always load back to a stable state.
Control Parafolk Autonomy Early
The autonomy slider is one of the most important settings in Paralives and it's easy to overlook. It controls how much your Parafolks act on their own without your direction. At full autonomy, they make their own decisions — sometimes brilliant, sometimes disastrous. At zero autonomy, they're completely under your control. For your first save, set autonomy to medium or lower so you can learn the systems at your own pace. You can always adjust this later in settings.
Use the Cheat Console (Ctrl+F1) from Day One
Paralives treats cheats as an official feature. Press Ctrl+F1 at any time to open the cheat console. Type help to see all available commands. The most useful early-game cheats are makeitrain (get 10,000 Paradimes) and editcharacter (re-enter the Paramaker to change your Parafolk after creation). Cheats are especially valuable in Early Access for recovering from bugs or soft-locks. There's no penalty for using them.
Set Day Length to Match Your Pace
The default day length in Paralives might feel too fast or too slow depending on your preference. Open the game settings and look for the day length slider. Short days mean faster progression but less time for activities. Longer days give you more breathing room to build skills, socialize, and manage multiple Parafolks without rushing. Many players find that slightly longer days dramatically improve their experience by reducing the "treadmill" feeling.
Find Hidden Train Tunnels
Beyond the bus system, there are train tunnels hidden throughout Melino's map. These let your Parafolk walk through hills and other obstacles, cutting travel time significantly. They're not marked on any tutorial or minimap — the only way to find them is exploration. Watch for subtle openings in terrain or areas where the map seems to suggest a shortcut should exist. Discovering these tunnels early gives you a major navigation advantage.
Watch the Newspaper for Opportunities
The New Paper (found at your home mailbox or around town) is more useful than it appears. It contains: job listings, Town Event schedules for the coming days, community announcements, and occasionally exclusive opportunities. New issues arrive regularly. Make checking the newspaper part of your morning routine — it surfaces opportunities you might otherwise miss by only looking at phone/computer job boards.
Join Town Events for Free Rewards
Town Events are one of the best sources of free items, skill boosts, and relationship building in the early game. The Weekend Market gives you access to unique items. Yoga Class provides Fitness benefits. Astronomy Club boosts Science Knowledge. Treasure Hunts on Thursdays can yield valuable collectibles. Check the newspaper or the event calendar to know what's happening each day, then plan your schedule around attending at least 1-2 events per week.
Prioritize Skills Over Money Early
It can be tempting to grind for Paradimes as fast as possible, but in Paralives, skills are long-term investments that compound. A Parafolk with high Cooking skill unlocks better meal quality (saving money on food), better career performance (earning more), and faster skill progression (reaching mastery sooner). Invest your early game time in practicing skills at home — cooking meals, playing instruments, painting — rather than chasing every Paradime. The financial rewards follow naturally from skilled Parafolks.
Build Relationships with Coworkers
In Paralives, your career performance is directly affected by your relationships with coworkers and managers. Positive workplace relationships boost your daily performance evaluation, which means faster promotions and better pay. Make time to socialize at work: use Together Cards to build rapport with colleagues during breaks, eat lunch with your manager, and prioritize building at least 2-3 strong workplace relationships in your first few weeks on any job.
Use "Now Hiring" Posters to Apply
Don't limit yourself to the phone or computer job boards. "Now Hiring" posters appear on community lots throughout Melino, and clicking them lets you apply directly at that workplace. This feels more immersive and sometimes reveals opportunities you wouldn't see on generic job listings. It's also a great excuse to explore new areas of town you haven't visited yet.
Explore Every District of Melino
Melino has 4 distinct districts: Old Town, Industrial, Mountain, and Countryside. Each has its own atmosphere, shops, services, hidden secrets, and NPCs. New players often stay in one area and miss out on what other districts offer. Make exploration a priority in your first week. Use the bus system to visit each district, talk to residents, discover shops, and find the areas where Town Events are hosted. You'll find it much easier to build a rich gameplay experience once you know the full map.
Understand the Separator Tool in Build Mode
The Separator tool in Build Mode is one of the most powerful — and most overlooked — tools available. It places an invisible divider that lets you create multiple distinct areas within what would otherwise be a single room. This means you can have different floor heights, different wallpapers, different ceiling colors — all within the same visible space. It's the key to creating porches, conversation pits, split-level living areas, and balconies without complex multi-story construction. Master this tool early and your builds will look professional from the start.
Plan Genetics Before Starting a Family
If you plan to have children in Paralives, examine both parents' genetic traits carefully before starting a family. Height, facial features, skin color, hair color, eye color, and hair texture all pass to children via a complex dominant/recessive gene system. Once a Parafolk is created, their genetic code is locked — you cannot preview or change what they'll pass down. "Unnatural" colors (neon hair, purple skin) will silently revert to random natural colors in children. Plan your founding generation with future generations in mind.
You're Ready
These 15 tips will save you hours of frustration and help you build a much richer first playthrough. Remember: Paralives rewards experimentation. Don't be afraid to try unusual combinations of skills, careers, and relationships — the game's systems are designed to support diverse playstyles.
