Life Stage Overview
Paralives features 8 distinct life stages, each with unique mechanics, activities, and progression opportunities. Understanding each stage helps you decide where to start your gameplay journey and what to expect as your Parafolks age.
All 8 Stages in Detail
Baby (Age 0-1)
The earliest stage of life. Babies require constant care and attention. They have no independent actions — everything must be managed by a caregiver. Babies cannot be edited in the Paramaker (no height sliders, no feature customization). They develop Language skills through social interactions with caregivers. This is the most hands-on stage and is purely about nurturing.
Toddler (Age 2-4)
Toddlers gain slightly more independence but still require significant care. The Potty Training skill develops during this stage through caregiver interactions. Toddlers learn their first words through Language skill development. This stage is transitional — the last stage before children gain real agency over their actions.
Child (Age 5-8)
Children gain significant independence and become manageable. This is the first stage that unlocks Talents in the Paramaker — making it a key decision point for long-term character development. Growth spurts begin during this stage and continue through Preteen and Teenager. Children can form their first meaningful peer relationships and develop hobbies.
Preteen (Age 9-12)
Preteens continue growing with additional growth spurts and receive a second personality point. This is an important stage for developing traits and refining Talents before the teenage years. Preteens have access to more activities than children but aren't yet burdened with career or romantic pressures.
Teenager (Age 13-17)
The final growth spurt occurs during the teenage years, after which physical development is complete. Teenagers have access to the Athletic Career (unique among careers — most others require Young Adult+). This is a transitional stage with increasing independence and the beginning of romantic capabilities. The last stage before full adulthood.
Young Adult (Age 18-39)
The primary gameplay stage for most players. Young Adults have full access to careers, romance, and all game systems. This is the recommended starting stage if you want immediate access to all features without going through the aging journey. The longest stage by age range, giving you plenty of time to build skills, careers, and relationships.
Adult (Age 40-64)
Peak career and social years. Adults have access to careers that require Adult+ status (Medical, Law) and represent the most economically productive years. Multi-generational gameplay becomes possible as adults can have children while their own parents (Elders) are still alive.
Elder (Age 65+)
The final stage. There is no afterlife in Paralives — Elders live their remaining years and then pass on. This adds emotional weight to elder gameplay: it's about legacy, family, and meaningful closing chapters rather than continued progression. Elders make excellent grandparent figures who help raise grandchildren while their adult children work.
No Afterlife
Paralives does not feature an afterlife, ghosts, or resurrection. When an Elder passes away, they are gone from the save file permanently. This design choice emphasizes the importance of family legacy — children carry on the genetic and emotional heritage of their parents.
Growth Spurt Mechanics
Only three life stages feature growth spurts:
- Child (Age 5-8): First growth spurt — Parafolk visibly grows taller and features mature slightly
- Preteen (Age 9-12): Second growth spurt — more significant physical changes as the body approaches teenage proportions
- Teenager (Age 13-17): Final growth spurt — completion of physical development into adult body
Height genetics are locked at creation, but the visible manifestation of that height develops through growth spurts. A Parafolk who will ultimately be tall will grow taller during each spurt. Growth spurts happen automatically during the aging process — there's no action needed from the player.
Personality Points
Each life stage can receive a personality point that can be allocated to refine Vibes, Talents, and Social Perks:
| Stage | Personality Points | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Baby | 0 | No customization available |
| Toddler | 0 | Skill development only |
| Child | 1 | First point, unlocks Talent selection |
| Preteen | 1 | Second point for refinement |
| Teenager | 1 | Third and final point |
| Young Adult | 0 | No additional points |
| Adult | 0 | No additional points |
| Elder | 0 | No additional points |
Planning Tip: If you want to experience the full personality point allocation journey, start as a Child. You'll get all three personality points across the Child, Preteen, and Teenager stages — shaping your Parafolk's complete personality arc.
Choosing a Starting Stage
- Start as Child (Age 5): Experience the full growth journey and personality development. Best for players who want maximum character development arc.
- Start as Teenager (Age 13): Skip early childcare while still experiencing growth spurts. A good middle ground.
- Start as Young Adult (Age 18): Full feature access immediately. Best for players focused on careers, relationships, and building.
- Start as Adult (Age 40): Skip early career grinding, jump straight into high-level careers and multi-generational family planning.
